NARAL Sells Women Down the River. Meanwhile, ineffective NOW president Kim Gandy sets sights on more powerful position

Via Lambert:
Here's Villager Nancy Keegan happily selling her constituency down the river:
When Barack Obama was campaigning for president, he promised to enact legislation to prohibit the states from limiting the right to abortion. Now that Obama is in the White House and solid Democratic majorities are ensconced in Congress, opponents of abortion rights have been bracing for that and other major changes to abortion laws.
But there are indications that what those groups dread most and some liberal voters eagerly anticipate as the rewards of victory might not come to pass - at least not yet. Democrats on Capitol Hill say that while they are committed to reversing several Bush administration policies with regard to abortion rights and family planning, they might hold off on pursuing the kind of expansive agenda feared by social conservatives.
Despite gains in the House and Senate in last year's elections, there are still significant numbers of moderate Democrats, particularly in the House, who either oppose abortion altogether or are not in favor of sweeping changes, instead preferring a more incremental approach. And any large-scale effort involving something as polarizing as abortion necessitates spending political capital, something the Obama White House needs in abundance at the moment to ensure the survival of its economic policies.
"We [what do you mean, "we"?] deal in reality," said Nancy Keenan, the president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. "You [But not you?] have to be pragmatic, realistic and, in the end, strategic."
[Reach me that bucket, wouldja, hon?]
Don't give these people a dime.
Sounds like familiar Obama speak, right? Well, here is Obot TChris at TalkLeft making a similar excuse for Obama selling our economic future down the river and calling it "pragmatic":
The Obama campaign made clear the candidate's belief that the political process is one of compromise, and that "change" meant working to get things done in contrast to the GOP's polarizing "our way or no way" strategy of governance. Obama even used the "perfect is the enemy of the good" quotation during the campaign.
There are legitimate reasons to question the wisdom of some comprises to which Senate Democrats have agreed, but the president's willingness to indulge compromise in a pragmatic effort to pass a stimulus bill should surprise none of his "liberal followers."
Myiq2xu at The Confluence calls out TChris:
I guess TChris thinks "pragmatic" means "selling out the people who elected you and getting nothing in return."
When the heck did "pragmatic" and "strategic" mean selling out your constituents? Are these people seriously that scared of being called racists or PUMAs or traitors that ANYTHING treacherous Obama says or does will be called "pragmatic" and "strategic"?
Oh, that's right. They have their own careers at stake so in fact they, the Villagers in Washington, are being strategic not to step out of line or else get thrown under the bus by teh bestest President evah. Kim Gandy is the latest traitor to women who plans on making sure that she is well rewarded for throwing away NOW's credibility in order to endorse Barack Obama and Larry the misogynist Summers. Rumor has it that Gandy is looking to become the next Director of the Women's Bureau in the U.S. Department of Labor. We should've known there was something in this for her too!
Keep your eyes open for any new reports on this rumor. Gandy will try to avoid any questions or vetting that might jeopardize this chance like Caroline "um, you know" Kennedy did in her Senate bid by making a pay to play deal behind closed doors.

Thanks for this Angry
If Gandy becomes the head of anything it should be as Ms. Magazine manager of distribution in boys prep schools.

that was so bad? I remember her late in the primaries flying to Oregon to stump for Hillary.
Was it that she endorsed Obama? Cannot keep track.
NARAL made themselves irrelevant. Yeeeuck.
Which I've linked to in the post. Though Gandy has never been "anti-woman", many of us believe that she and the national office did not do enough to hold Obama responsible for the misogyny during the primary and the general election. Regardless of Palin's beliefs, she's still a woman who was attacked with misogyny and NOW remained silent. They endorsed Hillary during the primaries but decided to endorse Obama in the general which was something they didn't have to do since they had never before officially endorsed a candidate for president who didn't have a woman as their running mate. Personally, I had issues with NOW even before the election and their lack of leadership or having a lot of influence over politicians to get things done.
We should nominate the NOW state chapter leader who endorsed Palin saying "this is what a feminist looks like" (if we could remember her name.)
But she's "pro-choice?"
