(CBS/AP) CBS News has confirmed from a Democratic source that New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has withdrawn as the Commerce Secretary designate amid a grand jury investigation.
President-elect Barack Obama has accepted that withdrawal.
"It is with deep regret that I accept Governor Bill Richardson's decision to withdraw his name for nomination as the next Secretary of Commerce," Obama said in a statement.
A federal grand jury is investigating how a California company that contributed to Richardson's political activities won a lucrative New Mexico state contract.
Is this the first of many? What happened to that great Obama vetting process?

MSNBO is worse than Fox ever thought of being.
They're all in the tank (though oddly, ABC will run a story critical of Obama every now and then). I got so mad at CBS, formerly my primary source of news online, that I deleted the bookmark months ago.
I've just recently started peeking at CBS again. This story is interesting. From it: "A federal grand jury is investigating how a California company that contributed to Richardson's political activities won a lucrative New Mexico state contract."
It appears those radical right-wing attorneys are going to make some ripples before they head out the door.
I've long since come to the conclusion that they're all crooked. What's important is having the power to use that crookedness against your opponent whilst covering your own tracks. That's what makes a successful politician.

I have concluded that Obama is both as clueless as "W" and as corrupt as Cheney. That makes for a very dangerous combination. To say he has bad judgement is an understatement. He, or somebody in his little enclave, had to have known this before nominating him.
My wife asked why I thought this was funny and I said Judas is just the first of many. She said I want to see the admin fail and I said no but I do want to see the scum Judas and the like go down in flames.

Sources tell ABC News that officials on the Obama Transition Team feel that before he was formally offered the job of commerce secretary, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson was not forthcoming with them about the federal investigation that is looking into whether the governor steered a state contract towards a major financial contributor.
Once the investigation became more widely known through national media reports last month, sources tell ABC News, the Obama Transition Team realized the FBI would not be able to give Richardson a clean political bill of health before the new administration is ready to send his nomination up to the Senate for confirmation.

This is heading off-topic, but when her negatives started climbing, his campaign shut her right down, kept her out of the limelight, and transformed her into Mommy Extraordinnaire. I have no great love for Michelle, but she was a well-educated professional and working woman and by no means stupid. They are clearly now shaping her up to be such a 'traditional' first lady as to rival Laura Bush. Contrast Bill's actions in response to the tremendous criticisms of Hillary during his campaigns and terms -- did anyone stick her in a box to shut her up with Bill's acquiesence?
Come to think of it (and now I'm really going off topic), think of the pride, respect and admiration with which Bill spoke of Hillary at every opportunity throughout the campaign. Contrast with Obama's possessive reactiveness -- have dare you criticize MY wife or MY family?
