International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 2008

http://www.un.org/events/women/violence/2008/
I just learned of this from PUMA PAC
"We need to do more to enforce laws and counter impunity. We need to combat attitudes and behaviour that condone, tolerate, excuse or ignore violence committed against women. And we need to increase funding for services for victims and survivors. I am determined to strengthen these efforts, including through my global campaign “UNiTE to end violence against women”, which aims to raise public awareness, increase political will and resources and create a supportive environment to make good on existing policy commitments."

November 25th & 16 Days of Activism
In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly resolved “that violence against women constitutes a violation of the rights and freedoms of women ... that there is a need for a clear and comprehensive definition of violence against women, a clear statement of the rights to be applied to ensure the elimination of all violence against women in all its forms, a commitment by States ... and a commitment by the international community at large to the elimination of violence against women” (Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women).
In December 1999, the 54th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 54/134 declaring November 25th the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute in 1991. Participants chose the dates, November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and December 10, International Human Rights Day, in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights. The 16 Days Campaign has been adopted as an organizing strategy by individuals and groups around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women.

This is an opportunity to promote actions against the violence towards women- today and the next 16 days, culminating on Dec. 10th as International Human Rights Day.
Too bad we have such short notice, but I like the idea of this.
And interesting it came about from Hillary Clinton's efforts years ago.
From pumapac blog, there was a suggestion to supply the women in burkhas with Uzis to "reform" the pig who was beating them, but perhaps that taking it to far.
wait. I haven't seen it in the news.
I'm traveling like crazy for two weeks but let me see what I can do.

The news releases included one about 19 million in grants to projects around the world. Good to hear what those projects will be. Also the list of organizations who are involved in this campaign. Condi Rice is the US official supporter- Hillary as SOS will then take over that role. That's great! She will promote it, I know, maybe get it some media attention then.

(CNN) -- A British man was jailed Tuesday for raping two of his daughters and fathering nine children over 27 years, a case with echoes of Austria's Josef Fritzl.
The two daughters were made pregnant 19 times; there were nine births, five miscarriages and five terminations. Seven of the children are alive but suffer genetic deformities.
The father, who cannot be named for legal reasons banning the identification of his victims and the surviving children, pleaded guilty Tuesday at Sheffield Crown Court, northern England, and was sentenced to serve 25 life sentences to run concurrently.
The judge said the minimum term the 56-year-old rapist should serve in jail should be 19½ years.
South Yorkshire Police Chief Superintendent Simon Torr said, "The victims of these terrible crimes have asked me to state the following: 'His detention in prison brings us only the knowledge that he cannot physically touch us again. The suffering he has caused will continue for many years, and we must now concentrate our thoughts on finding the strength to rebuild our lives.' "

The UK's Press Association reported that the rapes began in 1981 with daily attacks and that for long periods, they would be raped up to three times a week, and the assaults would continue through pregnancies. Their only reprieve came after they had just given birth or when they were ill because of the abuse.
If either daughter tried to refuse their father's attacks, they would be punched, kicked and or held to the flames of a gas fire, burning their eyes and arms, PA reported.
Despite visiting hospitals and meeting with social workers over the 27 years of abuse, no investigation was launched into the family.

Just read a great article by Carole Sheffield that calls sexual violence against women "sexual terrorism." Much like political terrorism it is a system used to control and dominate females.
Here are four types of sexual terrorism:

4. Ending tolerance for domestic violence
Violence against women cuts through all segments of Turkish society. But thanks to a major, multi-pronged campaign, the issue has come out from behind closed doors and is now squarely in the public arena. Read this special feature and view a PSA that was widely aired to change attitudes.

Refugee camps are intended to be safe havens - but displaced women often face many forms of gender-based violence. UNFPA has partnered on an interagency field manual that includes guidelines for addressing sexual and gender-based violence in refugee camps, and a related feature story from Chad.
