Weird stuff in Wisconsin

LSekhmet - Posted on 04 November 2008

I have never seen this before, and I just had to tell someone about it.

On the way into my temporary job this morning, I spotted a sign -- it said, "Same day registration in Wisconsin!"  (True.)

So, you might be asking, why was this a problem?

Because it also said, "Vote Barack Obama!" in big letters at the bottom, along with a telephone number (a 1-877-something number).  This, I believe, is quite illegal.

I am not surprised by this, considering all the other things the Obama campaign has done.  (Btw, another volunteer was carrying a much smaller sign for Democratic Assemblyman Cory Mason, an avid Obama supporter.  In the same color blue.)

This sign was a huge distraction for drivers along Wisconsin State Highway 31 this morning, and I believe the police told 'em to get out of the intersection (I saw 'em as they were walking to their cars at a fast food restaurant on the corner of 31 and State Highway 20.  The sign was still a huge distraction even as they walked back to their cars.)

Look.  You can vote the same day in Wisconsin; it has always been this way ever since I first was eligible to vote (at age 18).  But advertising a candidate along with that right is, as I said before, illegal.

Color me unimpressed.

Same day registration is an invitation for voter fraud. From the WSJ, Milwaukee Puts a Vote-Fraud Cop Out of Business [Link]

Red Hot & Blue Politics | Alice left me in Wonderland

I heard about this on Charlie Sykes' morning show on WTMJ (620 AM, Milwaukee, WI, for those keeping track); the police chief vehemently denied that anyone has been silenced, and said the officer in question hasn't yet put in his retirement papers nor talked to anyone about retirement.  Said that along with the usual five officers they have fifteen more on the streets going from precinct to precinct.

I won't trust that until I hear from actual voters this is what the police did, mind -- otherwise, I'm with John Fund (who was on WTMJ _before_ the police chief on Sykes' show), who said the Milwaukee Police Department was doing a lot of "back and fill" to make this look better on election day.

Btw, I forgot to mention that the sign I saw needed three or four people to hold it.  I amended this at Alegre's Corner, where this post has yet to get any comments.  (Thank you for commenting here, Grlpatriot!)

And NH -- this time, you got it first. ;-)

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  You screwed the pooch; time to pay the piper.

...Elections Division and report it.  I'd say call the media, but we know they are in the tank for BO.  Maybe if you have a local Fox outlet, you could try them.

I am glad I had no trouble voting once I was there.  And that neither did my Mom.  We both voted McKinney, as will my sister and niece.  (None of us believes WI is up for grabs, and McKinney is much closer to my values and core beliefs.)

We had high voter turnout but fortunately there were no lines.

I have written to the state elections board; the phone line was busy when I called (what a surprise!) and I have asked them if this is illegal, or just unethical?  (The whole thing with the sign saying both "same day registration" and "Vote for Barack Obama!" at the same time.)

Made me wish that I had a cell phone with a camera, and also that I hadn't been driving; I'd have taken a picture!

Saying something is weird in Wisconsin is like saying the sky is blue, the sun rises in the east and politicians are liars.;)

I voted last Friday here in the SE corner of WI and one of the women helping folks to register was wearing a bright red hooded sweatshirt with Obama's smug mug on it. This is illegal in WI.Frown

I wrote a letter to the editor about it in our local paper and sent an email to state election officials. Do I expect anything to be done? Nope. YellThis little corner of WI is so blue that half the local officials are Democrats who run unopposed every election.

As a lifelong Democrat before this year I have long been appalled at the mess the Democrats have made of our town and our county. But partisan voting keeps their crooked, inept, and corrupt butts in office. And since no Republicans are even running in many of the races we get the same old fiscal pinheads year in and year out.Surprised

What can you expect from people who proudly call themselves "Cheeseheads" and wear foam rubber, bright yellow, wedge-shaped things on their heads? I was born in Wisconsin and I can't explain it. Maybe it was all those years of traveling around the country when my dad was in the military. And no, I do not wear said head gear.Embarassed

Other than hot and melted, I can't stand the stuff so if this had been my diary I would have said that something stinks in Wisconsin.

I acted as an election official yesterday. How about this??? We had to fill out numerous voter assistance forms because we had folks coming in who could not read and those who are mentally challenged and unable to complete their ballots without assistance. The common thread in all this was the envelopes they all carried with "Barack Obama" written on them. I wonder what was IN the envelopes????

I am totally disgusted and very very afraid. I put my flag away the day the Supreme Court appointed Bush and vowed never to fly her again until we have free and fair elections in our great country. I decided when the primary was stolen and the evidence of voter fraud in the caucuses was ignored that my flag will remain folded and put away against the day when America wakes up and we once again have free and fair elections.

I feel like my Scots forebears must have felt so long ago when the plaid and the pipes were outlawed. May I have their strength and hold on to the belief that WE, THE PEOPLE, can prevail.

And for the record, my county went for McCain- thank GOD! At least I know there are SOME sane Americans left in this area! (McCain 54.3 to the other guys 44.2)

I pulled the lawn signs up late last night.   We had them for all the down tickets.

Can you imagine the screaming if all those people were there to vote for McCain?
