Day 5 without power

Our MapleMakes blogging sort of difficult, except when in the office like today.

We lost our electric at 10PM Saturday.  I had my generator ready to roll since it was obvious this storm would destroy many trees.   But the generator only powers so much.

I don't have it wired into the house.  Instead I take heavy duty extensions all over the house to power the fridge, the sump pump, the freezer, a few lamps and Mrs. Hampster's TV and DVD player.  No cable or phone either.  I've also hacked my boiler so we do have heat and hot water.

Just ducky!  Living with a headlamp attached to me like a third eye.  Getting up at 6 to fill the generator and our neighbor's who had the recent shoulder surgery.  Then off to the gas station to fill the 2 or 3 5 gallon jugs of fuel.

Oh! I forgot little Lola.  We have the grand puppy for two weeks and of course I need to feed and walk her first, then come home at lunch to walk her again since the former O'bot is still recovering from hip surgery and disc outages.

But dang if the main thing I wonder is, and the thing I've tweeted about is...

Does being without power, going to work without a shower, eating only cold food, no TV and no good light for 1/2 the day.  Does it give the Greedy Wingers any empathy towards those who live this way 365?

p.s.  The photo is of 1/3 of our shade maple which I'll be attacking with the chain saw this weekend.

if that nor'wester swept you off into Canada or Maine.  Glad to hear you survived.  My area only got a dusting and that was fine with me - no appetite for shoveling.  Figure it was due since I had the several weeks of flooding this spring to deal with.

It do make one wonder what the winter will bring.

So sad about Ms Rodman, Hillary's mother.  RIP - another great one gone.

And this is just same 'ol same 'ol - http://www.care2.com/causes/you-cant-prosecute-spousal-rape-those-women-wear-nighties-video.html

A Virginia senate candidate says a husband can't be prosecuted for raping his wife, since she was wearing a nightie. And he's likely to win the race.

Does Dick Black, no name comments, does he ever wonder what separates him from fanatical muslims who also think a woman's dress is the guilty party?

is not only blamed for causing rape by Muslims.  Southern Baptists and many other religions claim that women are asking for it unless her body is covered.  The common theme is that men are not responsible since there is no crime.  They should not be tempted so the fault lies with the women.

This also includes women who go out there as in running for political office.  Verbal rape [just review what Hillary was called] is rampant and allowed in this country as it serves to keep most women "in their place".

Glad to hear you got power back.

It really sucks to be without power, especially if you don't have a generator. When it happened to us because of a hurricane, we went to a hotel for a week and lost everything in the fridge. Our insurance covered meals out, the hotel bill, bottled water, and our fridge losses. When my mom loses power, she goes to a hotel, too.

and used it 4 times.  Worse time was almost 2 weeks and it was cold.  This time at least it wasn't horribly cold out.

I've wondered if insurance would cover my fuel for the generator.  2 five gallon jugs a day at $15/each for 5 days.  $150

I have a stump to carve. of all the tools I have I am shy using it. Best to you and yours. Power outages make one reflect on how frigile the underpinnings of civil society are and back in the day when the rest room was the great outdoors ...ans sub zero temps.... sorry about the tree.

how do you hack a boiler?  I may need to do that using batteries for emergency if power goes off in cold weather.

Since my boiler is fueled by natural gas, all that is needed is electric power to turn it on and off ie thermostat and pump.  I've read that a regular car battery can be used to handle this for short emergency use.

I'll see if I can get you a photo or sketch

It may be just this simple.  But expect if it were more folks would have it.

That should work for using a car battery like you wanted.

Mine is jury rigged into the heat alarm over the boiler.  a plug now comes out of that to my Generator when needed.  Not exaclty safe or legal so I like your idea.
