I got the following email this evening and wanted to pass it on in it's entirety.

Dear Friend,

A spontaneous hospital, established in the aftermath of Haiti's earthquake, feeds victims.Imagine you’re a victim of domestic violence in Haiti…  Before the earthquake on 12 January, you and your children were safe in one of Haiti’s women’s shelters. You were working to rebuild your life. And now, the shelter and so much else has been ripped away.

UNIFEM is working to raise 2 million dollars to rebuild women’s shelters and expand emergency services for women and their families.

Your contribution will fund emergency community-based violence prevention programmes, counselling services, provide emergency supplies and rebuild women’s centres.

Help us Say NO to violence against women and girls in Haiti. Every dollar you give counts as an action. Let us count you in. Donate Here

Sincerely,

Inés Alberdi
Executive Director, UNIFEM

I have not forgotten the oil-for-food scandal. I gave money to Haiti through the Salvation Army. I investigated and the SA has been involved in Haiti for a long time. Unlike other groups, the SA usually hits the ground quickly. We saw it in Louisiana and we can see it again in Haiti. I'm sorry, because women's shelters and orphanages are very worthy. However, I doubt if the UN spends the money the way they promise. If it was interested in Women's issues, it would force sanctions against the atrocities commited against women in Africa and the ME.
